House of Seven Gables

The House of the Seven Gables, also known as the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is a historic landmark located in Salem, Massachusetts. Built in 1668 by Captain John Turner, this colonial mansion is one of the oldest surviving 17th-century wooden mansions in New England. It gained fame through Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 novel, "The House of the Seven Gables," which was inspired by the home's dark, gabled architecture and the author's ancestral connection to Salem.

The house is renowned for its unique architectural features, including its iconic seven gables, secret staircase, and period-appropriate furnishings that transport visitors back in time. It is a prime example of the Elizabethan-style architecture of the period and offers a glimpse into colonial life. The property also includes several other historic buildings, such as Hawthorne's birthplace, which was moved to the site in 1958.

Today, The House of the Seven Gables is a museum and cultural center dedicated to preserving its rich history and sharing the stories of early American settlers, maritime trade, and the region's literary heritage. Visitors can explore the meticulously preserved rooms, learn about the house's storied past, and enjoy stunning views of Salem Harbor from the beautiful seaside gardens.
