Old North Church (Christ Church in the City of Boston)
Founding & Name: Built in 1723, Old North Church is formally known as Christ Church in the City of Boston.
Historic Role & Paul Revere: Its most famous moment came on the night of April 18, 1775, when Robert Newman and John Pulling climbed the church’s steeple to hang two lanterns as a signal to Paul Revere that the British were coming “by sea.”
Architecture & Design: The building is Georgian in style, with elements inspired by Christopher Wren’s designs in England The steeple is a prominent feature; interestingly, for the first ~17 years after construction, it had no wooden spire.
Congregation & Use: Though built as an Anglican church, it now serves as an Episcopal congregation.
Historic Site & Public Access: The church is a National Historic Landmark and part of the Freedom Trail. Visitors can tour the crypt, gallery, bell chamber, and explore its history.
Recent News & Restoration: In recent years, restoration work uncovered centuries-old murals of angels hidden under layers of paint — originally painted around 1730, then painted over in 1912.
Location: 193 Salem Street, Boston, MA 02113
