DRIVE IN MOVIES
While most drive-in theaters have disappeared over the years, a few wonderful classics remain within driving distance of Boston. Pack some blankets, bring your favorite snacks, and enjoy a nostalgic evening at one of these beloved New England drive-ins.
Mendon Twin Drive-In
About 45 minutes from Boston, this is probably the best-known drive-in in Massachusetts. Open since 1954, it features double features, a classic snack bar, and plenty of nostalgic charm. It's a true New England summer tradition.
We always play the Beach Boys when we’re headed to the drive-in. And we pack the Jeep with ice-cold beer and plenty of popcorn!
Wellfleet Drive-In Theatre
The last remaining drive-in on Cape Cod, this beloved theater has been entertaining moviegoers since the 1950s. Dev suggests, pair a movie night with a beach day and you've got the perfect Cape getaway. Don’t forget to bring the coconut oil for a healthier popcorn!
Some of our friends rented a convertible for the drive and to complete the experience. What a great idea! We only get a few warm months a year. Let’s make them memorable.
Northfield Drive-In
Just over the Massachusetts border, this retro drive-in has been showing movies under the stars for more than 75 years. It's a bit of a drive from Boston but worth it for the classic experience.
POP UP MOVIE NIGHTS: Around Boston, there are several wonderful opportunities to catch a movie under the stars this summer.
One of our favorites is the waterfront movie series at the Boston Harbor Hotel. With boats bobbing in the harbor and the city skyline sparkling in the background, it makes for a memorable night out. Bring a chair, grab a snack, and enjoy the show.
For a true beach experience, keep an eye on events at Revere Beach. There is something special about sinking your toes into the sand while watching a movie with the sound of the ocean nearby.
The Hatch Shell along the Charles River also hosts outdoor movie nights, offering beautiful views and a classic Boston summer atmosphere. Pack a blanket and make an evening of it.
Boston Landing: Boston Landing Outdoor Movie Nights
The movies are typically held at Athletes Park, the outdoor green space at Boston Landing. The events are free and usually include:
A themed pre-party
Live DJ
Lawn games and activities
Food and drinks available nearby
Bring-your-own blanket or lawn chair seating
Upcoming films for July/August 2026 Schedule
July 23 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Christmas in July)
August 20 – Rocky
Closer to home for Devon and company, our very own town green has summer outdoor events even a movie night! The Wellesley Town Hall Green summer concert series features free, family-friendly outdoor performances on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics.
The 2026 summer lineup includes:
July 8: Rico Barr (Motown Favorites)
July 15: Classic Groove (Mix of Favorites)
July 22: The Reminisants (Hits from the 50's to 90's)
July 29: A Minecraft Movie (PG) – Outdoor Movie
And if you enjoy discovering something a little different, the Coolidge Corner Theatre often presents outdoor screenings in unique locations throughout the city.
The best part? Most of these events are affordable, family-friendly, and a wonderful reminder that some of life's greatest pleasures are also the simplest.
So grab a blanket, pack some popcorn, and gather a few friends. Summer is short, and the movies are waiting.
We'll see you under the stars.
