250 ANNIVERSARY

If there is one place to celebrate America's 250th birthday, it's Boston. This July, the city where so much history began will come alive with Harborfest celebrations, the legendary Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, Revolutionary War reenactments, and the return of the magnificent Tall Ships to Boston Harbor. Whether you're a history buff, a fireworks enthusiast, or simply looking for a memorable summer adventure, 2026 promises to be one of the most exciting summers Boston has seen in decades. And like Devon says in her notes: “This is HUGE!”

Here are just some of the events for this July.... Happy Birthday America!

1. Boston Harborfest 2026 (July 2–4)

Boston Harborfest is expected to be the centerpiece of Boston's America 250 celebration. Taking place July 2–4, 2026, this beloved festival honors America's independence and Boston's role in the American Revolution. With historical reenactments, Freedom Trail activities, live entertainment, waterfront festivities, fireworks, and family-friendly fun throughout downtown Boston and the harbor, Harborfest promises to be one of the summer's most exciting events.

  • July 2 Kickoff Ceremony in Downtown Boston.

  • Historical reenactors portraying Revolutionary-era figures.

  • Live music and entertainment throughout the festival.

  • Activities and performances at Christopher Columbus Park.

  • A waterfront concert leading up to the fireworks.

  • The famous Harborfest Fireworks over Boston Harbor on Thursday, July 2 at 9:15 p.m.

  • The July 4 Reading of the Declaration of Independence and other patriotic ceremonies.

Perhaps a perfect Fourth of July in Boston would be: 9:00–10:00 a.m. – Procession and Declaration reading at the Old State House.

Lunch somewhere historic or along the waterfront. May we suggest: The Historic Choice...

Union Oyster House: America's oldest continuously operating restaurant. If you're spending the morning at the Old State House and Harborfest, it doesn't get much more historic than this. Think clam chowder, lobster rolls, and a genuine sense of old Boston.

Waterfront Choice: Joe's Waterfront

Located right on Boston Harbor, Joe's offers beautiful water views and a relaxed atmosphere. It's a great place to sit outside, enjoy a seafood lunch, and watch the harbor activity during Harborfest.

A stroll through Harborfest activities. (along Chirstopher Columbus Park and the Rose Kennedy Greenway, as well as the Waterfront)

Then either head home or stay for the evening festivities.

2. Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

Already one of the nation's premier Fourth of July celebrations, the 2026 event is expected to be even larger as part of the official MA250 festivities. The concert on the Charles River Esplanade will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display.

For the 2026 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, the concert begins at 7:00 p.m. on the Esplanade, and the fireworks are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. over the Charles River.

A few sources list the fireworks closer to 9:40 p.m., so we suggest to plan for a start sometime between 9:15 and 9:40 p.m., depending on the concert timing and event logistics.

For your planning purposes, we’d suggest:

  • Arrive by early evening if you're attending in person.

  • Expect the concert from 7:00 p.m. onward

  • Be settled into your viewing spot by 9:00 p.m. at the latest.

  • Expect the fireworks to last roughly 30 minutes

3. Sail Boston / Sail250 Tall Ships Festival (July 11–16)

This may be the most anticipated event of the entire summer. Dozens of majestic tall ships from around the world will sail into Boston Harbor for a week of public tours, demonstrations, and maritime celebrations. The opening "Parade of Sail" on July 11 is expected to be a breathtaking sight. We’ve been planning this all year.

According to organizers, some of the best public viewing areas are:

  • Castle Island

  • Fan Pier Park

  • Christopher Columbus Park

  • Charlestown Navy Yard

  • Long Wharf and the downtown waterfront

  • East Boston waterfront locations

Devon and friends will be sailing along side the Big Ships in their water taxi...

4. Revolutionary Reenactments and Boston 250 Events

Throughout July, Boston's historic sites will host special Revolutionary War-themed events, walking tours, reenactments, lectures, and exhibits as part of the city's yearlong Boston 250 commemoration. Since Boston is often called the birthplace of the American Revolution, many unique programs are being planned specifically for the 250th anniversary

And if you choose to stay home, well, no worries. There’s plenty to celebrate right from your very own living room! Look no further than your remote control:

We like to be out and about living our best lives and celebrating heartily, but, this month its America’s Birthday/Fourth of July weekend...the BIG 250! So, we’ll be doing ALL we can on boat, foot, land, and even in front of the telly TO TAKE IN AS MUCH PATRIOTISIM AS WE CAN. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
