Decorating for the Holidays

Inflatable vs. Classic

The debate between traditional decorations and blow-up inflatables comes down to differences in style, aesthetics, and personal taste. Traditional decorations are often valued for their craftsmanship, simplicity, and connection to holiday customs. They tend to have a more timeless, sophisticated look, using materials like wood, metal, or natural greenery, which can be more visually subtle and blend into a classic holiday aesthetic.

In contrast, inflatable decorations are popular for their bold, playful, and sometimes humorous designs, such as giant snowmen, cartoon characters, or Santa in various fun scenarios. They tend to be larger, more colorful, and eye-catching, which some people find festive and fun, while others find them overly commercial or out of sync with traditional holiday themes.

Call us old school, but we love the traditional. After all, the word ‘tradition’ is right there in traditional, so why stray from it? Many of us fondly recall the decorations we had as children, and let’s face it—they certainly weren’t blow-ups! That said, we’re not here to judge. When it comes to Christmas, we love all decorations. Sure, we may have our favorites, but a big, cheerful blow-up Santa on the lawn still brings a smile to our faces after a long winter’s day at the office!

We would like to ask our readers, to weigh in... what do you think? How do you decorate?

More Ways to Decorate for the Holidays

There are so many ways to decorate your home for the holiday season as there are toothpaste to choose from... Dev loves ordering wreaths for doors and windows from Volente and Wilson Farms. She also orders from Grandin Road. Of course, we just had to check it out being that Devon’s taste is first-class and spectacular! And we love how they explain who they are: At Grandin Road, we believe the time that matters most is the time we spend at home. It’s where we begin each new day, where we work, play, and recharge. It’s our place to pull family close, celebrate with friends, and escape the hustle of every day. It’s a part of who we are.

They sure do deliver...spend some time browsing their site and get some wonderful ideas of how to decorate this season, from lifelike wreaths, greenery, accents, and more...like  doorway drapings, and even cascading to farmhouse garland, they have it all, including life like wooly sheep home decor!

Devon also boasts a first-class collection of over 200 Nutcrackers which she proudly displays every Christmas! We’ve counted them once and it’s true! We like to say, Every Day is a Holiday with Devon! That’s why we call her blog THESE DAYS WITH DEVON! And the holidays are no exception.  We are inspired how she decorates, commemorates, and demonstrates what the holidays are all about. Thank you, Devon and C. Devon’s Homes, for all the inspiration all year through.

As for the outside of your house, well, some are turning to Light Projection. Projecting lights onto houses during the Christmas season has become a popular and festive way to decorate without the hassle of hanging traditional string lights. Christmas light projectors bring festive cheer with minimal effort, making them a perfect option for those looking to celebrate in style.

Some tips for Light Projection: Choose the Right Location:

Place the projector at a suitable distance for full coverage of your desired area.

Avoid pointing it directly at windows where it could shine inside and be distracting.

Secure the Device: Use stakes or mounts to keep the projector stable in windy or snowy conditions.

Consider Safety: Ensure projectors are waterproof and rated for outdoor use. Avoid aiming lasers where they might interfere with airplanes or neighboring homes.

Enhance the Effect: Combine light projection with traditional decorations, like wreaths or inflatables, for a layered look.

Use multiple projectors for larger areas or diverse themes.

Like most things, decorating for the holidays is a personal choice. Many of us simply re-create what our parents or grandparents did for the holidays. Some like the ease of a re-usable wreath that they can keep and adorn their door with every year. Many of us simply must have a real green evergreen wreath that brings the scent of the holidays. Although, these days, you can put up any kind of wreath, real or plastic, and with just the right spray, suddenly its’ Christmas! So the choice is yours.

What is your color scheme? Green and Red, or White and Gold. Some of you we know stick to the same thing each year, while others like to vary and change it up. There are so many options....
