The New England Aquarium

One of Dev’s favorite places in Boston, and she’s been a member since 2009!

The New England Aquarium, located on Boston's scenic waterfront, is one of the city's top attractions, dedicated to marine conservation, education, and research. Since opening in 1969, the aquarium has welcomed millions of visitors to explore diverse marine habitats and learn about ocean preservation. Here’s an overview of what you can expect:

The Giant Ocean Tank

The heart of the aquarium, the Giant Ocean Tank is a 200,000-gallon Caribbean coral reef exhibit that spans four stories. It features a spiraling walkway around the tank, where visitors can view over 1,000 animals, including sea turtles, sharks, and tropical fish. The tank’s resident green sea turtle, Myrtle, is a beloved fixture and has been with the aquarium for over 40 years.

Marine Life Exhibits

Penguin Colony: The aquarium's penguin exhibit surrounds the base of the Giant Ocean Tank and is home to over 80 penguins, including African and rockhopper species. This lively exhibit lets you watch these playful birds dive and interact. One of the most popular exhibits.

Did you know that you can actually apply to be an intern to help with these amazing and beloved penguins?! One of Dev’s best friends, Monica, did this for many years.  Here’s how:

Apply now for Spring 2025

Time commitment:

12-16 weeks. At least 3 Full Days Per Week (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), one weekend day required, preference for Sunday-Tuesday or Thursday-Saturday.

Summary: The New England Aquarium’s Penguin Colony is an open air, 150,000 gallon saltwater exhibit. It has 6 manmade islands with water temperatures ranging from 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. It is home to multiple temperate climate penguin species.

Penguin Colony Interns assist the penguin staff with the daily husbandry and programming requirements for the exhibit. (we would love to do this but we’re already working for Dev, which is almost as fun as playing with penquins!)

Amazon Rainforest Exhibit: A smaller but fascinating area, the Amazon exhibit showcases animals native to the Amazon Basin, such as piranhas, anacondas, and vibrant freshwater fish.

Seadragon Exhibit: One of the unique exhibits features seadragons and seahorses, delicate creatures resembling underwater plants that fascinate visitors with their camouflaging abilities.

Gulf of Maine Exhibit: Representing New England’s own marine ecosystem, this exhibit houses local species, such as Atlantic cod, sea stars, and lobsters, providing insight into the marine life of the region.

Shark and Ray Touch Tank

The interactive Shark and Ray Touch Tank lets visitors touch cownose rays, epaulette sharks, and other species in a shallow mangrove habitat. This hands-on experience is a favorite among families and provides an opportunity to learn about these animals up close.

IMAX Theater

The New England Aquarium’s IMAX theater offers a range of nature-themed documentaries in 3D. The 65-foot-tall screen and high-quality sound make for a fully immersive viewing experience, often featuring films about ocean exploration, wildlife, and natural habitats worldwide.

Animal Encounters and Special Programs

For a more interactive experience, the aquarium offers Animal Encounters, where guests can get closer to animals like sea lions and turtles, sometimes even helping with feedings.

Behind-the-Scenes Tours: These tours provide a behind-the-scenes look at aquarium operations, animal care, and the facilities that keep the exhibits running smoothly.

Dev tells us that the sea lions are out-front so you don’t even need to pay. You can see them for free!

Conservation and Research Efforts

The aquarium is a leader in marine conservation, conducting programs focused on ocean preservation, protecting endangered species, and rescuing marine animals, particularly sea turtles. Their Sea Turtle Rescue Team works with local and international organizations to rehabilitate and release rescued turtles.

Education Programs and Events

With numerous educational programs for schools and families, the aquarium offers guided tours, field trips, and summer camps aimed at educating future generations about marine life and conservation. Seasonal events, like themed nights and eco-conscious lectures, also draw crowds.

Dining and Gift Shop

The Harbor View Café offers fresh food with a great view of Boston Harbor, making it a relaxing spot to take a break. The gift shop, filled with ocean-themed souvenirs and eco-friendly items, is perfect for unique keepsakes that support the aquarium’s mission.

Devon’s favorite is Myrtle the Turtle. Myrtle is 96 years old last time we asked. She’s over 500 pounds, and eats lettuce, cabbage, squids, and Brussel sprouts! Hey we should try that...maybe we can make it to 100.  She also loves the jellyfish. And, she’ not alone. One of the most talked about exhibit is the jellyfish or “Jellies.” They have no bones or brains but they are one of the best survivors in the world! Come and be mesmerized by the jellies...

And Dev tells us that parking at the Aquarium is a secret spot when going into Boston, (if you are a member)!
