Daylight Savings Time is Here

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a practice that involves setting clocks forward by one hour in the spring (to "spring forward") and setting them back by one hour in the fall (to "fall back"). There are some potential advantages to setting the clocks back in the fall, which we will do on Sunday November 5th 2023.

Extended Sleep: When the clocks are set back in the fall, people gain an extra hour of sleep. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who may have been sleep-deprived due to the one-hour loss of sleep when DST began in the spring.

Circadian Alignment: Some people argue that setting the clocks back in the fall aligns more closely with natural circadian rhythms. With the onset of darker evenings and cooler weather, the body may naturally seek more rest, making the time change feel less disruptive.

Reduced Health Risks: Research has shown that the one-hour shift backward in the fall is associated with a reduction in certain health risks, such as a decrease in the number of heart attacks and strokes. This reduction in health risks may be due to the extra hour of sleep and the potential circadian alignment.

The Pros and Cons

However, it's important to note that the advantages of setting the clocks back in the fall are somewhat balanced by the disadvantages of setting them forward in the spring. The effects of DST changes can vary among individuals, and some people may still experience disruptions in their sleep patterns and daily routines when clocks are set back. Additionally, the overall benefits of DST are a subject of ongoing debate, and not everyone agrees on its effectiveness in achieving its intended goals, such as energy conservation.

For Children: DST shifts the clock forward, providing more daylight in the evenings. This can allow children to engage in outdoor activities, play, and sports after school, promoting physical activity and social interactions.

Improved Mood and Mental Health: Exposure to natural daylight, particularly in the evening, can positively impact mood and mental well-being. Children may experience improved mood and reduced symptoms of conditions like seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Better Sleep Patterns: Some children find it easier to adjust to DST, as the extended daylight hours in the evening can help regulate their natural circadian rhythms. A consistent sleep schedule is essential for children's overall health and well-being.

Ultimately, whether the advantages of setting the clocks back in the fall outweigh the disadvantages is a matter of personal perspective and may depend on individual circumstances and preferences.
