For more Rainy Day Fun we also suggest museums, and Boston has some of the best.

Let’s start with our staff’s favorite:

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, located in Boston’s Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood, is renowned for its collection of fine art, personal memorabilia, and stunning architecture. Founded by art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner in 1903, the museum is housed in a Venetian-style palace and showcases an eclectic mix of European, Asian, and American art. Its unique charm comes from Gardner’s personal arrangement of the artwork, which remains as she left it, along with a beautifully serene courtyard. The museum is also famous for the infamous art heist of 1990, one of the largest unsolved cases in art history.

Museum of Science

The Museum of Science, located on the Charles River in Boston, is one of the largest science centers in the world, offering interactive exhibits and immersive experiences that engage visitors of all ages. It covers a broad range of topics, from biology and astronomy to technology and environmental science. The museum is home to the Charles Hayden Planetarium, the Mugar Omni Theater, and many live animal exhibits. It’s known for making science fun and accessible with hands-on activities, live presentations, and a focus on STEM education.

Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA)

Located in Salem, Massachusetts, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is a leading museum of art and culture with a special focus on global connections and maritime history. It boasts an extraordinary collection of Asian art, particularly from China and Japan, along with early American art, Native American works, and maritime artifacts. One of the highlights is the Yin Yu Tang House, a 200-year-old Chinese house transported from Anhui Province, offering a rare glimpse into Chinese domestic architecture. The PEM blends history and contemporary art in a way that reflects New England’s rich cultural past while embracing global influences. We appreciate their quirky and unique exhibits like when they featured Wedding Gowns and Tea Pot Collections, and of course one on the Late Iris Apel!
