Kentucky Derby

May is also the Kentucky Derby. And if you can’t make it to Kentucky, well, Devon suggests throwing your own fabulous Derby party. This year, 2023, it’s May 6th. Why not plan one for your favorite peeps. Dust off your derby, get out the old silver cups and make those tasty Mint Juleps. This refreshing drink has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. Cool as Kentucky, fresh as spring...

Break Out the Silver Cups for Mint Juleps!

Each year almost 120,000 mint juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oak’s and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs racetrack. ~Cheers

A Derby: the distinctive round hat with a little brim. It was made in the US in the 1850s, but it’s probably named after the Derby horse race in England where men wore this kind of hat.

Here is the link to a recipe for a sublime Mint Julep.

And remember: a silver cup is still used now as it was back in the early 1800s because it is the silver that allows the ice to form on the outside of the cup. The proper etiquette for drinking a mint julep is to hold the cup by either the band on the base or top lip so that your hand does not warm the cup.

Devon says, you must buy your silver cups from Upstairs Downstairs in Beacon Hill. It’s one of her very favorite shops. Be sure to tell them Devon sent you....
