KAYAKING

Gliding across the water can be a wonderfully calming experience, while paddling provides an excellent workout that strengthens your core, improves balance, and gets you out in the fresh air.

Kayaking is one of New England's quintessential summer activities, and it's easier to get started than you might think. There are countless videos and beginner tutorials available online, and all you really need is a kayak, a properly fitted life jacket, and a paddle. Many local outfitters also offer rentals and introductory lessons, making it easy for first-timers to get out on the water safely.

Whether you're looking for a quiet morning paddle on a peaceful lake or an afternoon exploring scenic rivers and harbors, here are some of our favorite places in Boston and the MetroWest area to launch your next adventure.

1. Lake Cochituate – Natick/Framingham

One of the best places for beginners. The lake is scenic, generally calm, and close to MetroWest. It's perfect for an easy paddle and a relaxing morning on the water.

2. Hopkinton State Park

Another favorite for beginners and families. The large lake offers plenty of room to paddle, and rentals are available during the season. You can easily make a day of it with a picnic or walk afterward.

3. Charles River

Whether you launch in Newton, Wellesley, Cambridge, or Boston, the Charles offers beautiful scenery and a completely different experience depending on where you begin. Paddling near the Esplanade provides wonderful views of the Boston skyline, while the stretches through Newton and South Natick feel much quieter and more natural. 4. Sudbury River – South Natick and Concord

If you're looking for serenity, this may be a favorite. The river winds gently through conservation land with abundant birds, turtles, and wildlife. It feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.

5. Spot Pond – Stoneham

Located within the beautiful Middlesex Fells Reservation, Spot Pond is a peaceful place to paddle, with wooded shorelines, small islands, and very little motorboat traffic ideal for beginners.

If you crave a little adventure or simply want a quiet escape, kayaking is a wonderful way to reconnect with nature and enjoy all that summer in New England has to offer. Just be sure to always wear a properly fitted life jacket, check the weather before heading out, and let someone know where you'll be paddling. Then simply relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy the journey, one paddle stroke at a time.
