First Day Hikes

First Day Hikes are a wonderful way to start the New Year with fresh air and exercise, and the Boston Metro West area has several options to explore. This annual event, part of that nationwide initiative started in Massachusetts in 1992, offers free guided hikes in state parks on January 1. These hikes vary in difficulty and length, usually ranging from 1 to 3 miles, making them suitable for families and individuals of all ages.

In the Metro West region, potential locations include:

One of our favorite First Day Hikes is the ice sculptures around Boston, (located in the City Hall Plaza) stopping for warming treats along the way.

Blue Hills Reservation in Milton:

Known for its scenic trails and panoramic views of the Boston skyline, this was the birthplace of the First Day Hikes tradition.

Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord:

A chance to enjoy both nature and history, as this park commemorates the opening battles of the American Revolution.

Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord:

A 1-mile hike starting at the Thoreau House Replica, followed by hot chocolate at the replica.

Breakheart Reservation in Saugus:

A 2–3-mile hike starting at the Christopher P. Dunne Visitor Center, featuring post-hike clam chowder and hot chocolate by the fir
