Top Breweries

Here are five top breweries located outside of Massachusetts but still within New England

The Alchemist (Stowe, Vermont)

The Alchemist is a family-owned brewery known for its innovative approach to brewing, especially their celebrated Heady Topper, a double IPA that has achieved cult status among craft beer enthusiasts. The brewery focuses on unfiltered, unpasteurized IPAs that are packed with fresh hop flavors. Located in Stowe, Vermont, it has a strong commitment to sustainability and local community engagement. This beer is so good, Devon drove all over town on her early visits to Vermont just looking for a general store that carried the Heady Toper or the Focal Banger!

Allagash Brewing Company (Portland, Maine)

Allagash Brewing Company, founded in 1995, is renowned for its Belgian-style beers, with Allagash White being their flagship offering. The brewery has received numerous accolades for its commitment to quality and innovation. It also emphasizes sustainability through energy-efficient practices and a dedication to local sourcing. Their diverse range of beers includes everything from traditional Belgian ales to experimental brews.

Lawson's Finest Liquids (Waitsfield, Vermont)

Lawson's Finest Liquids started as a small brewery known for its hop-forward beers, particularly the Sip of Sunshine IPA. Based in Waitsfield, Vermont, Lawson's has expanded its offerings to include a variety of IPAs, stouts, and other styles. They are also noted for their community-focused approach, with a taproom that emphasizes a welcoming atmosphere and charitable giving. This is another favorite of Dev’s...and since by all accounts, Dev has GREAT taste, we say this is a must try! She tells us, now that she’s older she loves just a little sip.

Bissell Brothers Brewing Co. (Portland, Maine)

Bissell Brothers Brewing Co. is a popular Portland-based brewery known for its hazy, New England-style IPAs. Their flagship beer, The Substance Ale, helped pioneer the style and remains a favorite. The brewery is also recognized for its creative branding, community involvement, and energetic taproom atmosphere. It has become a key player in Maine's craft beer scene since its founding in 2013.

Tree House Brewing Company (Charlton, Massachusetts)

Tree House Brewing Company, located in Charlton, Massachusetts, is known for its intensely flavorful and aromatic IPAs, stouts, and other styles. With beers like Julius and Green, Tree House has garnered a devoted following. While it is technically based in Massachusetts, it serves as a key part of the broader New England brewing landscape, offering a picturesque setting and a strong emphasis on quality and innovation. This is on Dev’s to do list!

Although Tree House is based in Massachusetts, it's worth noting that it's considered one of the top breweries in New England, and it has a significant impact on the New England brewing culture and community. The other breweries listed are outside Massachusetts but also within the region, contributing richly to the craft beer scene.

NEW SPOT ALERT

Great American Beer Hall

The Great American Beer Hall is a concept that celebrates the culture of American craft beer in a communal and welcoming environment. These beer halls typically offer a wide selection of locally brewed beers, including IPAs, stouts, lagers, and seasonal specials, reflecting the diverse flavors of American brewing traditions. They are designed to be social gathering spaces where patrons can enjoy not just great beer, but also hearty, comforting food often inspired by regional American cuisine—think burgers, pretzels, wings, and artisanal snacks.

In addition to the extensive beer selections, Great American Beer Halls often host events like live music, trivia nights, and beer tastings, creating a lively atmosphere that fosters community spirit. They may also feature long communal tables, outdoor beer gardens, and rustic decor that blend the old-world charm of traditional European beer halls with a modern American twist. The emphasis is on creating a fun, casual space where beer enthusiasts and newcomers alike can explore the vast landscape of American craft beers, socialize, and unwind.

Whether located in a big city or a small town, the Great American Beer Hall aims to be a destination for both locals and visitors, providing a memorable experience centered around great beer, good food, and camaraderie. And like Dev says, this would be a great spot for October Fest!
