HISTORIC HOME FEATURE: BEAUPORT THE SLEEPER
🏡 Architectural Significance
Beauport is renowned for its Shingle Style architecture, a design characterized by the use of shingles on the exterior walls and complex shapes. The house features a labyrinthine layout with 56 rooms, each uniquely decorated to reflect different historical and literary themes. Sleeper filled the house with a vast collection of fine art, folk art, architectural artifacts, and other collectibles, making it a living catalog of his design philosophy.
🎨 Interior Design & Collections
Each room in Beauport showcases Sleeper's eclectic taste and innovative design approach. Notable rooms include the Octagon Room, the China Trade Room, and the Pine Kitchen, each reflecting different periods and styles. After Sleeper's death in 1934, the house was purchased by Charles and Helena Woolworth McCann, who preserved much of Sleeper's original designs while adding their own porcelain collection
