HISTORY OF THE MFA:
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), was founded in 1870 and originally opened its doors in Copley Square in 1876 with a collection of just 5,600 works. As the museum's collection and reputation grew, it required a larger space, leading to the construction of its current Beaux-Arts style building on Huntington Avenue, which opened in 1909. Over the decades, the MFA expanded significantly, with major renovations and additions, including the West Wing designed by I.M. Pei in 1981 and the Art of the Americas Wing in 2010, which showcases an extensive collection from North, Central, and South America. Today, the MFA houses over 500,000 works of art, ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts and Japanese prints to Impressionist masterpieces and contemporary installations. As a leading institution in art education and preservation, the MFA continues to serve as a vital cultural hub, attracting millions of visitors each year while promoting global artistic appreciation.
