Boston Theater

The Citizens Bank Opera House

The Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston, originally opened as the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre, is one of the city’s historic gems. Dating back to the early 20th century, it has an intriguing past that reflects Boston’s cultural evolution.

Beginnings and Early Years

The theater was built by vaudeville pioneer B.F. Keith as a grand stage for live performances, opening its doors in 1928. Its architect, Thomas W. Lamb, renowned for his elegant and elaborate style, designed the theater with a lavish Baroque influence. Inside, the decor features exquisite chandeliers, sweeping staircases, and detailed plasterwork adorned with gold leaf—all reminiscent of Europe’s most ornate opera houses.

Golden Age

In its early years, the theater was a central venue for Boston’s vaudeville acts, bringing together musicians, comedians, magicians, and more. As the era of vaudeville faded in the 1930s, the theater adapted by becoming a movie palace under RKO’s management, serving as a popular cinema for decades.

Challenges and Preservation Efforts

By the 1970s, however, audiences were moving to suburban cinemas, and the once-bustling theater faced financial hardship and disrepair. As demolition loomed, local arts advocates and preservationists stepped in, recognizing the theater’s value as an architectural and cultural landmark.

Restoration and Revival
In the 1990s, the Opera House underwent a $38 million restoration effort led by the Opera House Restoration Associates and The Druker Company. This meticulous restoration brought the theater back to its original glory, preserving every detail while modernizing it for contemporary use. Reopened in 2004, the theater—renamed the Boston Opera House—became home to the Boston Ballet and a must-visit venue for touring Broadway shows.
